Remarkable compact speakers - open, clear room-filling sound, December 22, 2008 By This review is from: Mirage Os3-Sat Premium Omnipolar Satellite-Bookshelf Speaker (Electronics) If you're looking for compact, attractive speakers that sound great, it's hard to do better than the Mirage OS3. (The OS3 series are the third generation of Mirage's well known Omnisat speaker.) They are very clear and open, without any of the boxiness or dull sound that conventional compact speakers often have.
The OS3s are an especially good choice if you're looking for speakers for a room that isn't a dedicated home theater with the recommended layout. That is, if you have an irregular room, multiple seating areas, or a room you use for more than just watching movies and listening to music, the OS3s do an amazing job of filling the room with nice sound. Many conventional speakers are directional, so they only sound best at one "sweet spot" in the room. Omnidirectional speakers such as these, on the other hand, spread sound into a large area (or in technical terms, they have very wide dispersion). Hooked them up to my Denon AVR 2106 when they arrived and on day 3 of listening to them-from streaming iTunes, DVD's and HDTV all I can say is wow-these speakers are great!
Awesome sound with amazing clarity. The Bass thumps, and the sound is not muddied in comparison to the Polks.
I originally had them on stands, but decided to mount them 8' off the floor. The sound comes from all over now as opposed to pushing straight forward.

Replacing Energy Take fronts (~2001 model), these Mirage speakers brought a lot more PUNCH to the field that I wasn't used to. That's a good thing. Comparatively speaking, the OS3 speaker produces distinct, tight mid and low range sound; a world better than the Energy speakers they replaced.
Music - straight stereo, AWESOME. This effect might not be everyone's cup of tea but the OS3s produce a phantom center channel. Harder-panned elements in the mix are distinctly isolated where they ought to be in the sound field while other elements of the mix "appear" as if they are sitting in front of the listening position. Love it.
Home Theater - wonderful. HD audio mixes really shine. "Quiet sound"/ambiance is accurately reproduced, score is powerful, foley, effects, etc. are all clear.
